Arline Fisch: Weaver of Metal, Echoes of Ancient Forms

Arline Fisch (born August 21, 1931) stands as a singular figure in contemporary metalsmithing and textile art—a testament to the enduring power of combining seemingly disparate disciplines. Born in Brooklyn, New York City, Fisch’s artistic journey began with formative experiences rooted in her family's traditions: her mother instilled in her the skills of sewing and weaving, while her father nurtured a fascination for the vibrant hue of red. These early influences profoundly shaped her aesthetic sensibility and would later permeate her distinctive approach to metalwork. Her formal education commenced at Skidmore College where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Art in 1952, followed by a Master’s degree from Illinois University in 1954. After gaining initial teaching experience at Wheaton College, Fisch embarked on an intellectually stimulating adventure—a Fulbright grant that propelled her to Copenhagen, Denmark—where she immersed herself in the study of silversmithing. This pivotal encounter ignited her passion for manipulating metal and experimenting with techniques reminiscent of weaving and braiding, a fascination that would become central to her artistic practice.
