1769 - 1852

Early Life, Family and Training

William Cuming entered the world in 1769. He was the youngest of four sons born to William Cuming. His early years were shaped by this family structure, growing up alongside his three brothers in an environment that would eventually see him establish himself as a professional painter.

In 1785, he began his formal training as a pupil in the Dublin Society's Schools. This was where he first learned to handle the tools of his trade, moving from basic instruction to more disciplined study. His hand showed promise early on. By 1790, he had earned a silver medal for figure-drawing, a recognition of his ability to capture the human form with precision.

Career in Dublin and Commissions

After completing his training, Cuming settled in Crow Street, Dublin. He worked there as a historical and portrait painter, establishing a steady presence in the city's artistic circles. His reputation grew through specific commissions, such as in 1793 when the Corporation of Dublin requested he paint the portrait of Alderman Henry Gore Sankey, a former Lord Mayor. This period of his life was marked by a consistent presence in local exhibitions; by 1800, he was contributing numerous portraits to the exhibitions held by the artists of Dublin in Dame Street.

His brush found a particular rhythm when working with female sitters. There was a specific focus in his approach to these subjects that became a recognizable part of his output. While his work was noted for this skill, he was financially secure enough to travel throughout Europe rather than being forced into a constant, prolific pace of production. This freedom allowed him to move between his studio and his travels without the pressure of immediate necessity.

By 1811, his standing within the local art community was solidified when he was named President of the Society of Artists in Dublin. His professional life was defined by these steady movements through the institutions of the city, moving from his early years in Crow Street to his later residence in Clare Street.

Leadership in the Royal Hibernian Academy

Cuming’s involvement with the Royal Hibernian Academy began when he was chosen as one of its original members. He brought his presence to the academy's exhibitions, contributing fifteen pictures in total between 1826 and 1831. His work appeared regularly during these years, marking a steady presence in the Dublin art scene.

In April 1829, he was elected president of the academy. He held this leadership position for over three years, until his resignation in October 1832. Even after stepping down from the presidency, he remained tied to the institution, serving as its treasurer in 1835. His commitment to the academy continued until he resigned his membership in January 1837, at which point he was named an honorary member.

Later Years and Death

After resigning from his presidency in 1832, Cuming took a break from the Dublin art scene to visit his brother Josias, who owned a sugar plantation in the West Indies. This period of travel offered a departure from his established life in Ireland. Upon his return, he did not leave the academy entirely, instead taking on the role of treasurer in 1835. His involvement with the institution remained steady even as his active painting career drew to a close.

By January 1837, he resigned his formal membership, though he was granted the status of an honorary member. He spent his remaining years in Dublin, eventually passing away at his home in Lower Abbey Street on 5 April 1852.
