Born in New York City, Stephen Edlich was an American collagist, sculptor, and printmaker whose career spanned several decades. Edlich’s work frequently engaged with the traditions of modernism, making direct references to the papier collé paintings of artists such as Braque and Picasso. His diverse output included serigraph prints, etchings, and mixed-media collages on paper or canvas, as well as free-standing and relief sculptures. In his later years, his practice expanded into large-scale mixed-media paintings on canvas, where he integrated tactile elements like burlap, sackcloth, and jute rope into acrylic painted surfaces.

Edlich’s sculptural work utilized materials such as Acrylite cast sheets and thin sheets of lacquered bronze, including both golden-hued Muntz metal and white Everdur Silicon Bronze.
