Born in 1947 in Detroit, Michigan, Nancy Mitchnick has established herself as a significant American painter and educator. Before her career as a painter took full flight, she served as a curatorial assistant at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Her path to fine art was unconventional; she initially intended to be a performative artist, utilizing modern dance and music, with paint serving merely as a backdrop. However, following advice to embrace painting, she transitioned into a dedicated practice. Her work gained national recognition through the 1980 "Kick Out the Jams" group show at the Detroit Institute of Arts, which highlighted the energetic handling of materials and thick stripes of pigment characteristic of her portraits.
