A Life in Buenos Aires
Emilio Centurión lived his entire life within the streets of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Born in 1894, he moved through the same urban landscape that would later become the backdrop for his creative output. His presence in the city lasted until 1970, marking a long period of residency in the same place where he first began to observe the world around him.
The rhythms of the Argentine capital shaped his perspective. He stayed rooted in this environment, finding his subjects within the local atmosphere. His work does not look toward distant lands but remains focused on the textures and figures found in his own surroundings.
The Canvas and the Subject
In 1934, Centurión produced La Venus criolla, a work executed in oil on canvas. The painting measures 130 cm in width and 185 cm in height. This piece carries a specific weight, occupying a significant space through its scale and the way the oil pigment sits upon the fabric.
The technique shows a focus on the physical properties of the medium. He used the oil to build form, creating a presence that is now held within the collection of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Argentina. His approach to the canvas was grounded in the tangible details of his subjects, particularly in how he handled light and skin tones in this particular work.
Legacy in the National Collection
While much of his personal history remains quiet, his contribution to the Argentine art landscape is anchored by the works that reached public institutions. The preservation of his oil paintings ensures that his specific way of seeing Buenos Aires remains accessible.
His importance is found in these physical objects:
- La Venus criolla: An oil on canvas work from 1934.
- National Presence: His inclusion in the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes.
