The Life and Art of Elly Abeking

Born in Berlin, Germany, Elly Abeking was a painter who developed her craft at the Berliner Malschule under the instruction of Wilhelm Müller-Schönefeld. It was during her time there that she met her husband, the illustrator Hermann Abeking, whom she married in 1903. The couple resided in Berlin-Charlottenburg, but in 1904, they acquired a summer residence known as the Büdnereien 14/15 in Althagen. Her family included two children, a daughter named Ortrud and a son named Thomas, both of whom pursued artistic paths in their own right.

Abeking’s artistic repertoire was diverse, encompassing landscapes, portraits, and interior scenes. Beyond her studio work, she contributed to the press by creating portraits of prominent figures, primarily for the B.Z. of the Ullstein Verlag. Her life in Althagen concluded in 1945, shortly after she had completed her sixty-ninth year.
