A life in Antwerp and Naples
Constant Wauters lived a short life that moved between the streets of Antwerp and the warmth of Naples. Born on 5 June 1826, he spent his early years in Belgium before his path led him south. His time in the world was brief, ending in Naples on 22 September 1853. The records of his days are found more in the oil and panel of his canvases than in long written accounts.
He worked during the middle of the 19th century. While some names from this era linger in heavy histories, Wauters left behind specific glimpses of life through his brush. His presence is felt in collections like the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp and the Hermitage Museum, where his panels remain.
The subjects on the panel
His hands worked primarily with oil paint on wood panels and cardboard. He looked at the people around him, capturing scenes that felt immediate. In 1845, he painted Return from the Hunt and The servant as a thief, works that suggest an interest in the quiet or perhaps more tense moments of daily existence. By 1850, his work Fair appeared in the Hermitage, showing a focus on the movement of crowds and public life.
There is a certain stillness in how he approached certain figures. In 1851, he produced Actors Before a Performance and Mother with a Child. These pieces do not rely on grand gestures but on the weight of the subjects themselves. Even his later works, like Gypsies, carry the specific textures of the materials he chose to use.
A legacy in fragments
The traces of his career are often seen in the auction rooms and museum inventories. His work has appeared at Bernaerts Auctioneers, with The letter reaching a price of 2,261 USD in 2015. These small markers are all that remain to trace the reach of his talent.
