- Early Influences: Solman’s artistic education began at the National Academy of Design in New York City where he eschewed formal instruction favoring independent sketching sessions in the subway. - The Subway Portraits: Perhaps Solman’s most iconic works are his gouaches depicting travelers on the New York City Subway, completed around 1934.
