The Mirror of Identity

In Osaka, Japan, a child was born in 1951 into a landscape shaped by the aftermath of American occupation. Growing up amidst the influx of Western music, film, and fashion, Morimura Yasumasa lived through a period where cultural boundaries were constantly shifting. His early training at the Kyoto City University of Art led him to study under Y. Ernest Satow, a photographer from Life magazine who introduced him to the techniques of the French Humanist tradition. These early years were spent focused on black-and-white still life photography and sculptural assemblages made from found objects, such as his 1984 work, Tabletop City (Arch of Triumph), where a fork leans against a glass containing a light bulb.

A shift occurred in 1985 with the creation of Portrait (Van Gogh). This marked the beginning of a practice centered on the self-portrait, driven by internal questions regarding his own Asian identity within a Westernized society. He began to use his own face and body as a medium to inhabit the roles of others. By adopting costumes, makeup, and props, he could step into the lives of historical figures and subjects from famous paintings.

The Art of Transformation

The process behind these images is physical and meticulous. It involves the construction of studio sets, the arrangement of dioramas, and the careful application of cosmetics to transform his features. As digital photography and editing software became more accessible in the late 1990s, the complexity of his compositions grew. He began to manipulate lighting and composition to integrate himself more deeply into the scenes he recreated.

His work often explores several specific themes through these transformations:

  • The fluidity of identity and its capacity for change.
  • The intersections of postcolonialism and authorship.
  • The Western perception of Japan and Asia as feminine.
  • The subversion of the male gaze through the depiction of female stars.

He has inhabited a wide range of personas, from the Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn to Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. In his An Inner Dialogue with Frida Kahlo series, he does not simply copy her image but creates a composite persona through a chemical-like reaction of admiration and introspection. He also brings to life figures from popular culture, such as Marilyn Monroe, Liza Minnelli, and Andy Warhol, blurring the lines between high art and mass media.

A Legacy in Collections

Morimura's practice has expanded beyond photography into film, video, live performance, and writing. He established M@M (Morimura@Museum) in 2018 to house his documents and self-produced exhibitions. His work is held in numerous permanent collections across the globe, including:

Through his continuous use of masquerade, he continues to examine how clothing and appearance can alter the perception of a person. His exhibitions have traveled to cities such as Moscow, Pittsburgh, and New York, bringing his investigations into the nature of the image to international audiences.
