Mere end…

3
Kingfisher and Bulrushes (801) af Hokusai

Kingfisher and Bulrushes

801 · Woodblock Print

A kingfisher perches upon a slender branch, its body a study in poised tension. Around it, the long, vertical stalks of bulrushes rise like green spears toward the sky. The bird is the center of a quiet world, its feathers rendered with fine, delicate lines that suggest a softness against the rigid stems. In the background, a small figure remains partially obscured, a silent observer lost in the reeds. The…

5
Kinoe no komatsu (1814) af Hokusai

Kinoe no komatsu

1814 · Woodblock Print · The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art, Washington, D.C.

Katsushika Hokusai, arguably Japan's most iconic artist—forever enshrined in the image of *The Great Wave off Kanagawa*—possessed a remarkable artistic versatility that extended far beyond landscape painting. While his monumental prints captivated audiences with their breathtaking depictions of nature’s fury and beauty, he also ventured into realms of human emotion and desire through his *shunga*, erotic woodblock prints, offering a glimpse into the cultural sensibilities of Edo Japan.

6
Cranes on pine tree af Hokusai

Cranes on pine tree

Woodblock Print

Katsushika Hokusai’s *Cranes on Pine Tree* is more than just a depiction of two elegant cranes amidst a wintry landscape; it’s a profound meditation on longevity, harmony, and the enduring beauty of nature – themes deeply rooted in East Asian philosophy and artistic tradition. Executed with the meticulous precision characteristic of Ukiyo-e prints, this artwork embodies Hokusai's mastery of capturing fleeting moments and imbuing them with symbolic weight. The scene…

7
Fuji Musume, the Wisteria Maid (1799) af Hokusai

Fuji Musume, the Wisteria Maid

1799 · Ink On Paper · Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

A single female figure emerges from the pale, textured grain of the paper, caught in a moment of quiet grace. She wears the heavy, flowing folds of a traditional kimono, rendered through bold, sweeping calligraphic strokes that suggest both weight and movement. The ink varies in density, shifting from deep, midnight blacks to soft, translucent grays that define the silhouette of her attire. Her features are delicate, traced with fine,…

To Wrestlers (801) af Hokusai

To Wrestlers

10
Femenine wave af Hokusai

Femenine wave

Acrylic On Canvas

Katsushika Hokusai's “Feminine Wave,” a cornerstone of Japanese ukiyo-e art, isn’t merely a depiction of a seascape; it’s an immersive experience. Painted during the late Edo period (circa 1830), this woodblock print transcends its medium to capture the raw power and ethereal beauty of nature—specifically, the relentless dance between ocean and sky. More than just a visual record, “Feminine Wave” is a meditation on dynamism, impermanence, and the profound connection…

Getting to know Hokusai

Naturens geometri

Fokus skifter.

århundrede, rejser hans indflydelse over verdenshavene. Fænomenet Japonisme vinder indpas i Europa.
