A Life Shaped by Light and Shadow Born in Algiers in 1865, Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer moved through a world defined by the shifting textures of the Symbolist and Art Nouveau movements. His early years in North Africa left an indelible mark on his aesthetic, as the Moorish influences of his childhood seeped into his later ceramic work. Before he was known for the soft, crepuscular tones of his paintings, he found his footing as a decorator in
the studio of Clément Massier in Golfe-Juan. Between 1887 and 1895, he applied his eye to ceramics, eventually rising to become the artistic director of the studio. During this period, he often signed his creations simply as L. Levy. His education began in earnest at the École communale supérieure de Dessin et Sculpture, where he studied drawing and sculpture from the age of fourteen.
