Early Life and Education Born: April 22, 1864, Bristol, Rhode Island Parents: John Willis Dearth and Ruth Marshall Dearth Family moved to Waterbury, Connecticut at age 15. Early artistic training with portrait painter Horace Johnson. Studied in Paris at the École des Beaux Arts under Ernest Hébert and Aimé Morot. n 1888. Exhibited with the Society of American Artists in 1889. Awarded the Webb prize in 1893. Early works (1890s-early 1900s) characterized by tonalism and influenced by the Barbizon school. Subjects primarily landscapes of Normandy, Long Island, and Montreuil-sur-Mer. Known for moody paintings with a preference for low key and subtle depth of tone.
