Master IWs historie
The Life and Workshop of Master IW
Master IW, also known as Monogramist I.W., was a Czech or Saxon Renaissance painter active between 1520 and 1550, primarily in north-west Bohemia. He was trained in the workshop of Lucas Cranach the Elder in Wittenberg before moving to Bohemia. While he had significant clients, no written documents have survived to identify the IW signature with a specific name. Some records from the Prague painters' fraternity suggest a painter named Jan Wrtilka, who worked in Louny, was the guest master of the Prague guild, but the neutral designation Master IW persisted in literature.
His clientele included Catholic clients such as the Osek Monastery, the Deacon's Church in Most, and St. Vitus Cathedral, as well as aristocratic families like the Saxon Fictum family. After 1538, he likely operated his own workshop with an assistant, supplying Marian devotional paintings to bourgeois families.
Artistic Style and Notable Works
The artist's style evolved from an early period characterized by fragile figures and sharp drapery folds to a later style defined by decorative details, such as friezes and gilded edges, and a mastery of light and shadow. His works often drew inspiration from Cranach's graphic models. Notable works include:
- The Suicide of Lucretia (1525)
- The Želina Altar (1526)
- Votive painting from Šopka, featuring the Sorrowful Christ
- The Pensive Christ (1541)
- The Murder of St. Wenceslas (1543)
His masterpiece is the double-sided votive painting from Šopka, which depicts the Sorrowful Christ on one side and the Holy Trinity on the other.
