The Artistic Evolution of Gérard Vulliamy

Born in Paris, France, Gérard Vulliamy was a painter and illustrator whose creative journey began with a deep attraction to art during his youth. Encouraged by his parents, he engaged in drawing, decoration, advertising, and fashion before approaching painting in 1928. After studying for four years at the academy of André Lhote, his work took several distinct directions. In the early 1930s, he was a member of the Abstraction-Création group and held his first solo exhibition at the Galerie Pierre in 1933. His practice also extended to drawing and engraving, working with figures such as Stanley William Hayter and Albert Flocon.

Vulliamy's work underwent significant shifts, moving through surrealism and an interest in ethnography following a period at the Musée de l'Homme. During the war, he remained in Paris and became a founder of the clandestine magazine La Main à plume. His artistic output included portraits of patients at the St Alban psychiatric hospital, which he illustrated for Paul Éluard's Souvenirs de la maison des fous. Later in his career, his painting transitioned toward a non-figurative direction, where the light of the Midi influenced a new abstract reality of the landscape.

Notable Works and Exhibitions

Throughout his career, Vulliamy's work was featured in numerous exhibitions across France and abroad, including the Kunsthaus in Basel and the Musée Picasso in Antibes. His collections are represented in various institutions, such as the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, which holds works including The Hand of God (La main de Dieu) and Mother’s Love (Amour de mère). His repertoire also includes illustrations for notable authors such as Paul Éluard and Francis Ponge.
