A Life in Hesse
Wilhelm Altheim lived his life within the quiet corners of Germany, moving from the surroundings of Groß-Gerau to the streets of Frankfurt am Main. His early years were shaped by the studios of his teachers, Johann Heinrich Hasselhorst and Frank Kirchbach at the Städelsches Kunstinstitut. He was a man who looked closely at what was near him. From 1895, he made his presence known in Eschersheim and later in Frankfurt, often finding his subject matter in the rural life of his immediate environment.
His hands were rarely still, working through various mediums to capture the world. He used oil, tempera, watercolor, and lithography. Beyond the brush, he practiced etching, producing at least thirty-five plates, many after 1908. His travels took him away from Hesse for periods of study, reaching Paris in 1894, Italy in 1904 and 1905, Holland in 1907, and the south of France in 1909. These trips brought new light to his work, yet he remained tied to the landscapes and people of his home region.
The Subjects of the Soil
The work of Altheim often rests on the simple, heavy reality of peasant life and the natural world. He had a way of rendering animals and laborers with a certain weight. His compositions frequently featured:
- Peasant scenes, such as a man chopping wood in front of his house. < LI>Animal studies, including wild horses in a stable and various cavalry subjects.
- Religious motifs, notably his 1904 work, Der barmherzige Samariter (The Good Samaritan).
- Landscape views that captured the distance and scale of the countryside.
He was influenced by the way Pidoll approached nature and how B. Mannfeld shaped his later etchings. There is a monumental quality to his larger landscapes, even when he is focusing on small, intimate details like a lady's slipper near the hem of a skirt. He did not seek grand drama, but rather the steady presence of a shepherd on the road or washerwomen at their task.
A Family Connection
Artistry ran through his family, as he was the younger brother of the painter Georg Altheim. His connection to the art community in the Rhine-Main region was deep, evidenced by his membership in the Freie Vereinigung Darmstädter Künstler and the Verband der Kunstfreunde in den Ländern am Rhein. He even received an honorary salary from the latter association at one point.
His life ended in Frankfurt am Main in 1914. While his brother Georg also practiced art, Wilhelm's legacy remains in the drawings and prints that collectors still find in the Rhine-Main area today. His etchings, like The Shepherds of Bethlehem, remain as physical traces of his time spent observing the world through a lens of quiet, local detail.
