The Artistic Journey of Vincent Pepi
Vincent Pepi was an abstract expressionist painter associated with the New York School. His work is characterized by action painting, a style he produced consistently throughout the second half of the 20th century. Pepi's artistic development was shaped by his studies at the Cooper Union and the Pratt Institute, as well as his travels to Africa, Mexico, and Italy. While living in Rome between 1949 and 1951, he witnessed the emergence of the Abstract Expressionist movement in New York City. Upon returning to the United States, he studied briefly with Hans Hofmann.
His practice involved a preference for painting in a consistently smaller format and often a solitary existence in his studio. Pepi's technique was influenced by the automatic techniques of the Surrealists, which he transformed into a form of gesture painting. He sought the spontaneous and uncontrived revelation of the unconscious through his work. His approach was informed by a range of sources, from the Old Masters and Futurists to contemporaries like Matta and Gorky.
Style and Influences
Pepi's aesthetic was deeply connected to the concept of improvisation, a link reinforced by his love for music and his ability to play the tenor saxophone. He viewed color and music as parallel disciplines. His paintings often reflected a structure reminiscent of Cézanne combined with the free improvisatory phase of Kandinsky. He described himself as an academic artist who navigated the path between these two influences.
Throughout his career, Pepi exhibited his work at several notable venues, including:
His notable works include Black Abstraction (1951), which is held in the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.
