A life shaped by movement and brushstrokes

Stevan Todorović moved through the centers of European art with a steady purpose. Born in Novi Sad, his early years took him to Szeged for schooling before he reached Vienna in 1850 to study. This period of training in Vienna, followed by time in Munich, provided the technical foundation that would later define his hand. He traveled through Italy and Paris, absorbing the light and methods of the masters. By 1857, he had settled in Belgrade, a city where his presence would be felt far beyond the edges of a canvas.

His life was not confined to the studio. He carried a physical discipline into his daily existence, acting as a founder of modern fencing and the Sokol movement in Yugoslavia. He even opened a drawing school in Belgrade where the curriculum included singing and gymnastic exercises. This blend of physical vigor and artistic study marked his approach to life. He lived long enough to see the turn of the century, passing away in Belgrade in 1925.

The evolution of a Serbian hand

The work of Todorović shifted as he aged, moving from the emotional weight of Romanticism toward the structured precision of Academicism. His early spirit remained rooted in the Romantic style, which is visible in his most personal works. He was also a man of the moment, serving as a war painter and correspondent during the Serbian-Turkish Wars between 1876 and 1878. Through his eyes, the conflicts were documented not just through words, but through visual records.

His brush often met the needs of the church and the state. Alongside his wife, the painter Poleksija Todorović, he worked on large-scale religious compositions. Together, they painted iconostases for several churches, including the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin in Bogatić and the Holy Trinity Church in Negotin. These works required a shared patience and a commitment to sacred tradition.

Portraits and legacies

In his portraiture, Todorović captured the faces of the era, most notably those of the Obrenović royal house. His depiction of Natalie of Serbia is often noted for its resemblance to the famous portrait of the Florentine lady, earning her a specific nickname in Serbian history. He had a way of rendering the features of the ruling class with a clarity that felt both formal and present.

His artistic output was broad, covering several forms:

  • Portraits of royalty and private citizens
  • Religious iconostases and altarpieces
  • Historical paintings and landscapes
  • Sketches, studies, and drawings

Beyond the paint, his influence remained in the institutions he helped build. He established the first art school in Belgrade, ensuring that the next generation would have a place to learn the fundamentals of drawing. Much of what he created remains held in collections such as the Art Department of the Museum in Smederevo and the National Museum.
