The Life and Career of Rolland Lefebvre
Rolland Lefebvre was a French painter whose life moved across the borders of Europe. He was born in 1608 in Bagneux, in the region of Anjou. His early years were shaped by the landscapes and traditions of France before his path led him toward the Mediterranean. He spent much of his working life moving between different cities, seeking a place where his specific skills might find a steady hand.
His presence was felt in various corners of the continent, but his final years were spent in England. By the time he reached the end of his life in 1677, he had settled in London. He died in Bear Street, Leicester Fields. His passing marked the end of a long career that spanned several decades and multiple countries, leaving behind a record of a man who navigated the shifting artistic circles of the seventeenth century.
Training and Activity in Italy and Venice
Lefebvre spent many years studying in Italy, a period that shaped his approach to both history and portraiture. His long residence in Venice left a mark on his identity, leading many to refer to him as Lefebvre de Venise. He moved through the Italian landscape, documenting his presence in places like Rome around 1636, absorbing the local traditions of painting.
His time in Venice brought him close to the formal structures of the art world. On 6 January 1663, he was admitted as a member of the Venetian Academy of Painting and Sculpture. This recognition, however, was not without friction. He was admitted specifically as a portrait-painter, a distinction that caused a quarrel because he sought recognition as a history-painter. This disagreement led to his exclusion from the Academy on 14 March 1665.
Patrons and Activity in England
After his exclusion from the Academy, Lefebvre moved to England. He found a place within the circle of Prince Rupert, the count palatine of the Rhine. This connection was built on a specific skill; Lefebvre revealed a new method of staining marble to the Prince. This discovery secured him the Prince's patronage and made him a protégé. He spent his time there producing faux stained marble and painting portraits and small history pictures.
His presence in England was marked by these technical demonstrations and his work for the court. He lived in Bear Street, Leicester Fields, until his death in 1677. He was buried in St. Martin's-in-the-Fields. While his reputation in England was not widely esteemed, his ability to manipulate materials left a mark on the circles he inhabited.
Key Works and Artistic Subjects
Lefebvre’s brush moved between the grand scale of history painting and the more intimate focus of portraiture. He produced small history pictures, works that required a careful hand to capture narrative detail within a limited space. His interest in the human form and character was evident in his portraits, where he sought to document the likenesses of his subjects through varied techniques.
One notable oil on canvas, The Young Widow, was created about 1665. This work focuses on a woman in mourning, capturing a specific moment of quietude. The painting uses the medium to settle on the textures of costume and the somber mood of the subject. It remains a clear example of how he approached the depiction of individual figures and their emotional state.
