The Hand and the Earth
Born in Amsterdam in 1916, Raymond Both moved through the world as a maker of many forms. He was a man of diverse talents, finding his expression through the brush of a painter, the chisel of a sculptor, and the meticulous hand of a mosaic maker. His life was rooted in the Dutch landscape, a place where the weight of material and the grace of form often met in the quiet corners of the city.
His work often sought a dialogue with the very structures of the urban environment. Rather than remaining confined to the canvas, his vision expanded to the walls of buildings, where he could engage with the permanence of stone and concrete. He understood how light and shadow might dance across a textured surface, turning a mere facade into a site of contemplation.
The Language of Form and Material
In the mid-twentieth century, Both’s hands worked with the heavy, honest textures of the earth. He found a particular resonance in concrete, a material that many might find cold, yet he imbued it with life and narrative. His compositions often reached toward the elemental, seeking to bridge the gap between the man-made and the natural world.
His creative output was defined by several distinct modes of production:
- Painting, where color met the canvas to capture fleeting impressions.
- Sculpture, through which he gave physical weight to his ideas.
- Mosaic and tile work, particularly in large-scale architectural installations.
One of his most significant contributions to the visual landscape of Amsterdam Nieuw-West remains the work titled De Scheppende Hand & Chaos. Created in 1962, these two partially openwork concrete tile tableaux were placed upon the northern facade of the Hervormd Lyceum West. They utilized earth tones to depict a series of motifs that whispered of the divine and the terrestrial.
A Legacy in Stone and Shadow
The motifs he chose for his architectural works—hands, birds, trees, and the earth itself—suggested a preoccupation with the origins of life and the chaos of existence. These figures, rendered in the muted colors of the soil, invited those walking the Hemsterhuisstraat to look upward and consider the relationship between the hand of the creator and the wildness of nature. It is a quiet, enduring presence in the city he called home.
By the time of his passing in Amsterdam in 1994, Both had left behind a body of work that refused to be categorized by a single medium. He remained a visual artist who understood that art could be as heavy as a concrete slab and as delicate as the wing of a bird, existing in the space where the built environment meets the human spirit.
