Early Life and Artistic Training
Nikifor Krylov was born in 1802 into a poor family in Kalyazin, Russia. His early years were shaped by the modest circumstances of a Kalyazin bourgeois, far from the grand academies of the capital. His path toward becoming a painter began through practical work. In 1823, he worked with an artel to paint the iconostasis in the Terebeni Monastery, located in the Vyshnevolotsky Uyezd of the Tver Governorate. It was during this time at the monastery that he first met Alexey Venetsianov, a meeting that would change the course of his life.
By 1825, Krylov had moved to Saint Petersburg. He settled in the house of Venetsianov, who became a significant influence on his development. As one of the teacher's first students, Krylov began to refine his skills in portraiture and landscape painting. His talent was recognized enough that, in July 1825, he was permitted to attend drawing classes at the Imperial Academy of Arts. This period of study allowed him to transition from the religious commissions of his youth toward a more formal education in the arts.
Patrons and Imperial Recognition
Krylov’s talent did not go unnoticed by those who held the keys to the imperial art world. Following the guidance of his teacher, he was brought under the patronage of the Imperial Society for the Encouragement of the Arts. This connection provided him with a vital bridge between his humble beginnings and the formal circles of Saint Petersburg. His ability to capture a scene or a face led to early recognition from the highest levels of society.
The recognition he received was both personal and professional. In 1827, the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts awarded him a small gold medal, honoring his work on a piece titled Winter as well as his various portraits. Such honors helped solidify his place among the emerging artists of the era. Even his private studies drew interest from the nobility; for instance, a view of the front garden at the apartment of his mentor was acquired by Empress Elizaveta Alexeievna.
As his reputation grew, his paintings began to find homes in significant collections. His work The boy with a candle in his hands was purchased by P. P. Svinyin for the private Russian Museum, ensuring that his vision would be preserved for those who studied the art of the period. These acquisitions reflected a growing respect for his ability to translate the world around him onto canvas.
Notable Works and Collections
The breadth of Krylov's output is reflected in the diverse subjects he chose to capture, from the quiet stillness of the landscape to the formal presence of the Russian nobility. In 1827, he produced Russian winter, a work that helped earn him a small gold medal from the Society for the Encouragement of Arts. This period of his life saw him moving between the intimate scenes of daily life and the more structured requirements of portraiture. His ability to observe the world around him allowed him to create works that felt deeply rooted in the reality of his time.
His skill in portraiture is perhaps most clearly seen in his 1829 painting, Vladimir Stepanovich Apraksin. This portrait, which depicts the subject in the uniform of a colonel of the Life Guards Horse Regiment, is held today in the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. It remains a significant piece of his legacy, preserved within one of the most important collections in the city. Through such works, he captured the likenesses of the people who shaped the social fabric of the Russian Empire.
Beyond the formal portraits of high-ranking officials, Krylov also turned his attention to the more humble aspects of Russian life. Before the 1830s, he painted Peasant woman with child, a piece characterized by a sense of naturalness and a careful, attentive approach to his subjects. This work is part of the collection at the Russian Museum. These paintings, along with his other compositions, offer a glimpse into the life and vision of an artist whose career was cut short by a cholera epidemic in 1831.
