A life between lines and structures

Miljenko Horvat moved through the world with the eye of someone trained to see both the weight of a building and the lightness of a sketch. Born in 1935 in Varaždin, Croatia, his early years were shaped by the study of architecture at the Technical-architectural faculty of the University of Zagreb. It was here, under the guidance of Professor Josip Vaništa, that he began to navigate the space between structural precision and creative impulse. During his architectural studies, he became the youngest member of the Gorgona group, an avant-garde circle known for its private, often absurd, intellectual exercises. His time with this group involved projects like Gorgona - Then and Now and various explorations of modernity and freedom.

In 1962, his path led him to Paris, a period of several years that preceded his move to Canada in 1966. This movement across borders brought a change in scenery but not in the fundamental curiosity of his practice. He settled in Montreal, where he would spend much of his career. His work often bridged the gap between different mediums, utilizing painting, drawing, photography, and collage. He also experimented with more technical methods, including silkscreen, lithographs, and even early computer graphics during the 1970s.

The intersection of technology and hand

As the decades progressed, Horvat’s interests expanded into the digital realm. Starting in 1970, he began conducting visual research into computer art. This period saw him producing works such as Computer Triptych plus one and various digital printouts. He participated in exhibitions like the Computer Art Exhibition in Toronto in 1971 and showed computer graphics at the Tendencies 5 exhibition in 1973. These experiments were not separate from his earlier training; they were a continuation of a search for new ways to mark a surface, whether through ink, pastel, or digital output.

His output was varied and spanned many techniques:

  • Printmaking: Silkscreen, lithographs, engraving, and offset printing.
  • Traditional Media: Oils, acrylics, ink, and pastel.
  • Digital and Photographic: Computer graphics, digital printouts, and photography.

A presence in collections and memory

The traces of his work remain in various institutions across North America and Europe. His pieces can be found in the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the Canada Council Art Bank, and the Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke. Other notable locations include the Spencer Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In his home region, his work is held in the Collection of Marinko Sudac in Zagreb.

Beyond the visual, Horvat was a man of words and design. He published poetry in English and his drawings appeared in collections of poetry by Alexis Lefrançois. He also worked as an author, illustrator, curator, and designer. After years of living abroad, he returned to Zagreb, where he passed away in 2012. His career, spanning over 150 exhibitions, left behind a record of a life spent looking closely at the textures of both the physical and the digital world.
