Early Life, Family and Training
Leo Fellinger was born on 7 June 1884 in Graz, Austria-Hungary, into a family with deep roots in local craftsmanship. His father, Leopold Fellinger, was a jeweler and goldsmith who operated a workshop in the city, and his grandfather, Josef Alois Fellinger, had followed the same trade. Growing up in this environment, Leo was raised by Leopold and his mother, Josefa Fellinger, who lived until 1941. His early years in Graz provided a foundation of discipline and technical awareness before he moved toward the fine arts.
His formal artistic education took him across several major European centers. In 1903, he began his studies at the Malschule of Anton Ažbe in Munich, a significant step for a young painter seeking to refine his technique. This path led him to the Academy of Fine Arts Munich in 1904, where he was admitted to the Naturklasse of Gabriel von Hackl. His training was thorough, involving evening anatomy lectures at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich and life drawing sessions with Max Mayrshofer and Fritz Hass.
Seeking broader perspectives, Fellinger eventually traveled to Paris to study at the Académie Julian. During his time there, he worked under the guidance of Lionel Royer, Marcel Baschet, and William Laparra. This period of intense study helped shape his skills as both a painter and a graphic artist, preparing him for a career that would eventually span decades and multiple countries.
Professional Career and Recognition
Fellinger’s professional life was marked by significant institutional respect and a steady presence in the Austrian art scene. During the 1930s, his contributions to the arts were formally recognized by the state. He received the Golden State Medal from the Federal Ministry for Education, Art and Culture in 1930, followed closely by the Austrian State Prize for Gesamtschaffen in 1931. These honors reflected a period of established success in his career as a painter and graphic artist.
The complexities of mid-century Europe also shaped his professional path. Following the Second World War, he worked as a portrait painter for the Soviet occupation forces. This period of his life was followed by travels to Italy, including stays in Florence and Rome, before he eventually settled in the hilly landscape of Frannach in the Oststeiermark region. His influence within the local artistic community remained strong well into his later years. He served as the President of the Künstlerbund Graz from 1974 to 1975, a role he held during the final decade of his life.
His lifelong dedication to his craft earned him several high-level distinctions. In 1959, he was awarded the title of Professor. Later, in 1975, he was honored with the Golden Honor of the City of Graz. These accolades recognized a lifetime of work that spanned from his early training in Munich and Paris to his final years in Austria.
