Early Life, Family and Training
Joop Kropff was born in The Hague on May 22, 1892. He was the son of Sophie van Duinen. In 1897, when his mother married Hendrik Nicolaas Johan Kropff, he was recognized by his father's name. These early years in The Hague provided the foundation for a life spent observing the world through line and color.
His formal training began through evening classes at the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague. He spent his time there studying drawing at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. While these studies provided him with technical grounding, he also developed the instincts of an autodidact. He moved through his years as a painter with a self-taught sensibility that informed his approach to the canvas.
Artistic Style and Technique
Kropff’s hand moved through many mediums, from the delicate touch of a pastellist and aquarellist to the precise, controlled lines of an etcher, lithographer, and pen draughtsman. His early work followed a naturalistic-impressionist path. He focused his attention on the quiet details of flowers, landscapes, nudes, portraits, and still lifes. There is a certain weight to his palette; the colors often lean toward the darker side, creating a sense of stillness. His compositions frequently carry a dreamy quality, as if the subject matter is caught in a moment of soft, muted light.
As the decades passed, his approach to form underwent a significant shift. By the 1950s, he moved away from the recognizable shapes of the physical world and embraced an abstract painting style. This transition marked a departure from his earlier, more representational tendencies. His output during this period shows a wide breadth of practice, ranging from the traditional sensibilities of the Hague School to entirely non-figurative, abstract compositions. This evolution allowed him to explore the relationship between color and space without the anchor of a specific subject.
Memberships and Teaching
Kropff’s presence in the Dutch art scene was marked by his involvement in several established circles. He was a member of the Pulchri Studio in The Hague and the Teekengenootschap Pictura in Dordrecht. His affiliations also included the Haagse Kunstkring and the avant-garde group Verve. As his practice shifted, he joined the Posthoorn Group between 1956 and 1962, and later became part of Fugare from 1960 to 1967.
Beyond his own studio work, he shared his knowledge through teaching. He held a position at the Teeken- en Schilderacademie (Academy of Drawing and Painting) Ars Aemula Naturae in Leiden. There, he worked with students, passing on the technical foundations of drawing and painting.
Notable Works and Commissions
Kropff's reach extended into the royal circles of the Netherlands, as Queen Wilhelmina purchased one of his works in 1932. His early output often focused on the quiet details of domestic life and the natural world. In 1927, he produced Still Life Vase of Flowers, and later, around 1950, he painted Still Life with Apples. These works reflect a period when his hand was occupied with the textures of petals and fruit.
His later years saw a shift toward the non-figurative. He moved away from recognizable subjects to explore the weight of color and form, such as in his Abstract composition, a pastel on paper measuring 49 x 33 cm. This transition from the naturalistic to the abstract marks a significant change in his visual language. Even when working with larger scales, the focus remained on the arrangement of space, seen in An extensive view of a town with a cathedral, probably Den Bosch, an oil on canvas measuring 87 x 112.5 cm.
Other works capture specific, localized moments. Backyard Entrance is an oil on canvas that looks into a quiet, private space. His ability to handle different media allowed him to move between the precision of a draughtsman and the fluid touch of a painter.
Where to See His Works Today
Tracing the presence of his paintings requires a look toward several significant collections in the Netherlands. His work is held within the Rijkscollectie, where his contributions are kept as part of the national holdings. You can also find his pieces in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, which maintains a selection of his output within its permanent galleries.
In The Hague, his paintings are part of the collection at the Kunstmuseum Den Haag. Some of his works are also held at the Gemeente Museum, The Hague, though these are currently on loan. These locations offer a way to see how his focus shifted from the naturalistic scenes of his earlier years to the more non-figurative compositions he developed later in life.
