A Life in Art and History
Jacques Bertaux was a French painter, etcher, and draftsperson born in Harcy, France. A student of Jean-Jacques Bachelier, his artistic journey began with genre scenes, including depictions of hunting and pastoral landscapes, such as his 1786 work Paysage champêtre. His work often captured the tumultuous spirit of his era, including a large canvas depicting the Prise du palais des Tuileries during the events of August 10, 1792. Bertaux was also a frequent contributor to the Paris Salons, exhibiting various military compositions, including cavalry combats and troop marches. His ability to document significant historical moments is further evidenced by his depiction of the imperial procession for the coronation ceremony in 1804, known as The Crossing of the Pont-Neuf.
