The Life and Art of Franz Heckendorf
Franz Heckendorf was a German expressionist painter and university teacher. Born in Berlin, Germany, his artistic career was closely associated with the Berlin Secession. His work gained significant recognition during the Weimar Republic, and he notably contributed works to the painting event at the 1928 Summer Olympics. However, his career faced severe challenges when his art was classified as entartete Kunst starting in 1937.
Beyond his contributions to the art world, Heckendorf’s life was marked by profound personal struggle during World War II. Due to his actions in helping Jews escape over the Swiss border, he was incarcerated in various prisons and was eventually held in the Mauthausen concentration camp. He died in Munich.
