A Legacy in the Shadow of the Court
Born in Madrid, Felix Castello grew up in a house where the scent of oil and pigment was a constant presence. His father, Fabrizio Castello, held a position as a painter for King Philip II, working within the walls of El Escorial, the palace of Alba de Tormes, and the Palacio de Pardo. This lineage meant that art was not merely a profession for Felix, but a family inheritance. His grandfather, Giovanni Battista Castello, known as Il Bergamasco, had already established a presence in the craft. By the time Felix was a young man, the path of the brush was already laid out before him.
He spent his formative years under the guidance of Vincenzo Carducci and Bartolomeo Carducci. The influence of these teachers was so deep that his own hand often mirrored theirs, making it difficult for later observers to distinguish where one artist ended and another began. He likely spent many years as an officer in the Carducci workshop, working quietly behind the scenes before his own name appeared in the official records of independent painters.
The Royal Appointment
The life of a court painter was marked by shifts in status and responsibility. In December 1615, Felix married Catherine de Argüello. Two years later, a vacancy opened in the royal household following the death of his father, and he received the title of Painter to the King. This was a position he would hold again in 1627, after the death of Bartolomé González y Serrano. His work was not confined to the private quarters of the monarchy; he contributed to the portraits of kings intended for the Royal Palace of Madrid.
His hands moved through various religious and secular commissions across the Spanish landscape. He left his mark on the chapel of Santo Cristo de la Paciencia in the Convent of the Capuchins and worked within the cloister of the Convent of Santa Barbara. His brush also reached the church of San Juan in Telde, Gran Canaria, where he worked on the Lactation of the Virgin to St. Bernard. In the Prado Museum, a work attributed to him by style is the Saint Francis of Assisi.
The Final Years in Madrid
Life in Madrid was a series of quiet transitions. After the death of his first wife, he remarried Barbara Huete in February 1648. He remained in the city where he was born, living through the height of the Baroque period. When he died in September 1651, he left behind a body of work that remains tied to the traditions of his teachers and the service of the Spanish crown.
