Early Life and Artistic Training

The story of Ernst Witt begins in Altona, where he entered the world on 1 November 1901. It was a time of shifting tides, and the young man would eventually find his purpose through the disciplined study of form and color. His path led him toward the Kunstgewerbeschule Hamburg, an institution where he would spend the formative years between 1919 and 1923. Under the guidance of Arthur Illies and Julius Wohlers, he learned to command the tools of his craft, absorbing the technical rigors required of a serious painter.

As his talent began to take shape, Witt found himself drawn into the burgeoning creative community of his home city. In 1920, he became a member of the newly founded Hamburgische Künstlerschaft, a step that signaled his growing presence among his peers. This period of his life was marked by a transition from a student seeking direction to a man finding his own voice within the artistic circles of Hamburg. By 1923, he had moved beyond the classroom to establish himself as a freelance painter, working independently to navigate the complexities of a professional life in the city.

Artistic Career and Political Involvement

Witt’s life was deeply intertwined with the turbulent political currents of his time. He was a committed member of the KPD and the Assoziation revolutionärer bildender Künstler (ASSO), finding a purpose in the intersection of art and activism. His hands were not merely occupied with the brush, but also with the creation of political posters for the KPD, translating his convictions into visual messages for the public. This commitment to social causes would eventually bring him into direct conflict with the authorities. In 1937, the regime targeted his creative output, leading to the confiscation and destruction of his painting Zirkusszene and his watercolor Schachspieler in Oran. These works were deemed contrary to the official artistic canon of the era.

The shadows of persecution grew darker in 1938, when Witt faced the harsh reality of the state's intolerance. Following a contact with a Jewish woman, he was imprisoned for ten days in the KZ Fuhlsbüttel. Such moments of hardship marked a period of profound uncertainty. Even as the world descended into the chaos of war, his life remained tied to the movement of armies. During the Second World War, he served as a war correspondent for the Wehrmacht, traveling through Greece, East Prussia, and Norway to document the unfolding conflict.

Post-War Activities and Affiliations

When the shadows of the previous regime finally receded, Witt sought to rebuild the creative spirit of his city. In 1945, he became a co-founder of the Gruppe von 1945, a collective born from the necessity of renewal. This impulse to organize and collaborate continued into the following year, when he helped establish the Künstlervereinigung Der Baukreis. Through these affiliations, he remained deeply woven into the social and professional fabric of the German art scene during a period of profound reconstruction.

His influence extended beyond the studio and into the classrooms of Hamburg, where he held various teaching positions. He shared his knowledge with a new generation of students, ensuring that the technical traditions of painting were passed forward. This period of his life was marked by a dual commitment to both the instruction of others and the physical rebuilding of his environment. He accepted numerous commissions for art in buildings, translating his vision into permanent fixtures of the urban landscape. His hands shaped glass friezes, windows, and murals that integrated his art into the very walls of the community.

Notable Works and Artistic Style

The evolution of Witt’s hand reveals a profound shift in how he perceived the world around him. In his early years, his brushwork was marked by an expressive intensity, seeking to capture the raw energy of his subjects through bold movements. This period of his life was defined by a certain emotional urgency that sought to translate feeling onto the canvas. By 1937, this approach was evident in his oil painting Stute mit Fohlen, where the medium allowed him to explore the physical presence of his subjects with a directness that characterized his formative years.

As the decades passed and the world changed, so too did his visual language. The ink used in his 1943 work Norwegische Straße suggests a different kind of precision, a departure from the heavy oils of his youth. This transition eventually led to a significant stylistic transformation. From 1955 onward, Witt moved away from the representational and toward the realm of abstraction. This shift was not a sudden break but a gradual shedding of form, as seen in his 1955 oil painting Spätherbst in Blankenese, which signaled his commitment to a more distilled, non-figurative way of seeing.

Later Years and Death

The shadows of war eventually reached the very spaces where he sought to create. For a time, Witt found a sanctuary in an atelier within the Villa Ohlendor, a place where his artistic life continued amidst the growing turmoil of the era. This refuge was not to last, however, as the destruction of the bombing of Hamburg in June 1943 claimed the villa and his workspace alike.

As the decades passed, the painter remained a presence in the cultural landscape of his home, continuing his work through the shifting tides of the mid-century. He lived to see the evolution of his own hand, moving from the expressive tendencies of his youth toward the abstraction that would define his later years. He eventually passed away in Hamburg on 10 April 1977.

His final rest was found at the Ohlsdorf Cemetery. He was laid to ground in Planquadrat AG 18, a quiet location situated to the west of Kapelle 7. There, his life's work and his personal history remain anchored in the soil of the city he called home.
