Born in Catamarca, Argentina, Emilio Caraffa began his artistic development in Rosario, where he learned to sketch and draw at the local National College. His formal training in painting took place in Buenos Aires between 1883 and 1884, a period that led to a scholarship from the Minister of Justice and Culture, Eduardo Wilde. His education continued across Europe, where he attended art academies in Naples and Rome, and studied under Francisco Pradilla at Madrid's Royal Fine Arts Academy of San Fernando. In 1887, he was inducted into the Order of Charles III.

Upon returning to Argentina in 1890, Caraffa settled in Córdoba. In 1896, he received authorization from Governor José Figueroa Alcorta to establish the Provincial Fine Arts Academy, and he later served as a professor at the Córdoba National University starting in 1900. Notably, he was commissioned to decorate the ceilings of the Córdoba Cathedral, a project completed in 1914.
