Early Life, Family and Training
David Bautz entered the world on June 3, 1884, in The Hague. He was born into a family headed by his father, Johan Carel Bautz, an official, and his mother, Jacoba Kraamer. Growing up in the Netherlands, his early years were shaped by the steady, structured environment of his family life in The Hague.
His interest in the visual arts eventually led him to formal study. He enrolled at the Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in Den Haag to refine his technical skills. During his time at the academy, he studied under the guidance of Frits Jansen, a teacher who helped shape his early development as a painter and etcher.
This period of training provided the foundation for his lifelong dedication to his craft. Through his studies, Bautz developed the discipline required for the various mediums he would later pursue, including drawing and etching. His education in The Hague remained a central part of his identity as he moved from a student into a professional artist.
Artistic Career and Recognition
Bautz established himself within the Dutch art community through his active involvement in respected circles. He was a member of the Haagse Kunstkring and the Pulchri Studio, places where his presence was felt among his peers. His skill as a painter, etcher, and draftsperson earned him several honors early in his career. In 1908, he was awarded the Vigeliusprijs, a recognition that signaled his growing reputation. This was followed by further success in 1909, when he received the large silver medal of the Prince of the Netherlands at the exhibition of Levende Meesters in Arnhem.
His reach extended well beyond the borders of the Netherlands. In 1913, he traveled to Munich for the International Art Exhibition, where he was awarded a small gold medal. A few years later, his work gained further international attention when he won a gold medal at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco in 1915. These accolades reflected a career defined by technical precision in landscapes, portraits, and still lifes.
Beyond his own studio practice, Bautz shared his knowledge with the next generation. From 1923, he served as a teacher at the Academie van Beeldende Kunsten en Technische Wetenschappen in Rotterdam. His influence as an educator was significant, as his students included several notable figures such as Piet van Boxel, Wim Chabot, and Fiep Westendorp. He continued to teach private lessons, leaving a lasting mark on the artistic landscape through both his personal output and his dedication to his pupils.
