Popis díla

“There’s an alternate world that we live in which is invisible. It is a world comprises of electronic devices, computer programs, networks, media, and information; one we call the Crystal City.” The city is called crystal, because it grows like one. All the elements in the city develop individually, with an internal pattern and logic, and continue to spread towards infinity. It is transparent, lithe, invisible, and unquantifiable, and yet it projects a world of unparalleled realism. Wu specializes in the new-media way of thinking. He explores mankind’s physical losses resulting from changed perceptions in a world shaped by visual media. “Our understanding of the world is flat, sliced and compressed. It has a lot to do with the fact that we are so used to images,” Wu says. For instance, once we’re online, we’re able to “arrive” at another “place” via different interfaces.

Wu Chi-Tsung: Bridging Tradition and Innovation in a Contemporary Landscape

Born in Taipei, Taiwan, in 1981, Wu Chi-Tsung’s artistic journey is defined by a profound respect for both Eastern aesthetics – particularly the traditions of Chinese landscape painting – and Western techniques. His work isn't merely an imitation; it’s a deliberate dialogue between these seemingly disparate worlds, resulting in strikingly original pieces that explore themes of light, nature, time, and the very essence of image-making. From his formative years at the Taipei National University of the Arts, where he honed his skills in calligraphy, drawing, and ink painting, Wu embarked on a path of experimentation, ultimately forging a unique visual language that has garnered international recognition.

Early Influences and Artistic Foundations

Wu’s artistic foundation was deeply rooted in the classical traditions of Chinese landscape painting, or shan shui. This genre, dating back centuries, emphasizes capturing not just a literal representation of nature but also conveying an emotional response to it – a sense of harmony, contemplation, and connection with the natural world. Crucially, Wu’s training extended beyond simply replicating these established techniques. He independently studied ink painting under Ni Tsai-Chin, gaining invaluable insight into the nuances of brushwork, composition, and the philosophical principles underpinning shan shui. This personal apprenticeship provided a critical counterpoint to his later explorations with photographic processes.

The Cyano-Collage Series: A Reinterpretation of Texture

A pivotal moment in Wu’s artistic development arrived with the creation of his *Cyano-Collage* series, beginning in 2015. Rejecting traditional ink and brush techniques, he embraced the cyanotype process – a photographic method utilizing sunlight to create stunning blue prints on paper. This seemingly simple shift proved transformative. By manipulating the paper through folding and crumpling before exposure, Wu created intricate textures that mimicked the rugged surfaces of mountains, the flowing movement of water, and the subtle shifts in light and shadow found within traditional shan shui paintings. The resulting images are not photographic reproductions but rather interpretations – ghostly echoes of nature captured through a distinctly modern lens.

Wrinkled Texture: Embracing Imperfection and Time

Building upon the success of the *Cyano-Collage* series, Wu further refined his approach with the *Wrinkled Texture* works, initiated in 2012. Inspired by the traditional Cun Fa technique – a method used to create textured surfaces in Chinese landscape painting – Wu utilized cyanotypes to achieve a similar effect. However, instead of meticulously applying ink, he deliberately introduced imperfections and folds into the paper before exposure, embracing the inherent randomness and beauty of the process. These works are not about achieving perfect representation but rather capturing the fleeting qualities of light, time, and movement. The ‘wrinkles’ themselves become symbolic – representing the passage of time, the erosion of landscapes, and the ephemeral nature of existence.

Beyond Landscape: Installations and a Broader Exploration of Image

Wu's artistic practice extends beyond landscape painting, encompassing photography, video installations, and stage design. His early installation *Crystal City* (2009-2019) demonstrated his fascination with light and its transformative power, creating immersive environments filled with translucent geometric shapes that evoked both utopian visions and dystopian realities. Works like *Dust* (2013) confront the viewer with the stark reality of environmental degradation, using plastic waste to create unsettling yet compelling imagery. Throughout his career, Wu has consistently questioned the nature of images themselves – their origins, their impact, and their ability to evoke emotion and provoke thought. His work is a testament to the enduring power of art to engage with complex social and philosophical issues.

Wu Chi-Tsung’s artistic achievements have been widely recognized through numerous awards, including the Liu Kuo-Sung Ink Art Award (2019), the Award of Critics and Editors of Art Magazines at WRO Media Art Biennale (2013), and the Taipei Arts Award (2003). His work is held in prestigious collections worldwide, reflecting his growing international acclaim. He continues to live and work in Taipei, maintaining studios in Berlin and Ho Chi Minh City, demonstrating a commitment to both artistic innovation and global engagement.
