      Prior to his untimely death in 2001 Stephen Procter was Head of the Glass Workshop at the ANU School of Art. Born in the United Kingdom in 1946, Procter was initially self-taught in glass engraving and spent a number of years perfecting his techniques in that field. In the late 1970s further study in Vienna led to an expansion in his understanding of glass and ultimately to an illustrious career as a glass artist, teacher and mentor. Procter moved to Canberra in 1992 to take up the position as Head of the Glass Workshop at the ANU School of Art.Procter’s work is in numerous collections including those of the Corning Museum of Art, New York; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; the Royal Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh; Museum of Decorative Art, Lausanne; the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto; the National Gallery of Australia; the National Gallery of Victoria and the Parliament House Art Collection, Canberra. He has been in numerous solo and group exhibitions and in 2008 Stephen Procter: lines through light held at the Canberra Museum and Gallery celebrated his life’s work through his glass, paintings, drawings and prints.Intermedian is a quietly beautiful piece. The open spherical forms sit on a rectangular glass base in a state of delicate balance and harmonious equilibrium. The artist has imbued an exquisite tension into the work by the inclusion of the clear possibilities of immanent movement in the spherical forms. This activates the spatial configuration around the work and allows the play of light, so embraced by Procter, to take a special role. Within a severely limited formal vocabulary the artist alludes to the landscape and to the spirit of that landscape symbolised by his unique and considered use of light.

      Richard Anthony Proctor is not a visual artist; he was an English astronomer, mathematician, and prolific author. Born in Chelsea, England, in 1837, his life shifts from the quiet study of mathematics at Cambridge to the frantic pace of scientific journalism. The stability of his early years dissolves when a bank collapse strips him of his independent means, forcing a transition from specialized academic writing to a more accessible, popular style designed to sustain his family.

      He moves through the scientific circles of London with a sharp, critical eye. In 1865, he publishes Saturn and its System at his own expense. The work is technically proficient but fails to find a wide audience. This moment marks a pivot. He realizes that the public hunger lies not in arduous study, but in clarity and engagement. He begins to write for the masses, producing scores of titles that bridge the gap between complex celestial mechanics and the curious layperson.

      Mapping the Red Planet

      The year 1867 brings a significant scientific achievement. Using twenty-seven drawings by the observer William Rutter Dawes, Proctor constructs one of the earliest maps of Mars. He applies his own nomenclature to the Martian surface, naming features after prominent astronomers. His map features:

      • The Beer and Maedler continents
      • The Dawes and De La Rue oceans
      • The Kaiser Sea, later known as Syrtis Major Planum

      While his specific names are eventually superseded by the work of Schiaparelli and Antoniadi, his method of utilizing existing observations to create a cohesive planetary view remains a vital part of his scientific legacy. He also applies this precision to time, calculating the sidereal day of Mars with an estimate that nears modern accuracy.

      A Life of Scientific Discourse

      Proctor’s career is defined by both immense productivity and public friction. He founds the weekly magazine Knowledge in 1881, a platform that allows him to disseminate science across the English-speaking world. His output is staggering: hundreds of articles, over fifteen hundred lectures, and dozens of books including The Sun and The Universe of Stars.

      Yet, this prominence comes with conflict. He frequently clashes with the established astronomical authorities of his time, such as Sir George Airy, particularly regarding the observation of the Transit of Venus. His position as an independent, entrepreneurial researcher places him at odds with government-funded institutions. This tension follows him to New York City, where he dies in 1888. He leaves behind a vast body of work that transformed astronomy from a specialized discipline into a subject of widespread public interest.
