The Origins of a Kwoma Vision

Born in the village of Mariweli, Papua New Guinea, Abgwala Kalaba Yuanei emerged from the hills north of the Sepik River. This region, specifically the Washkuk Hills, is home to the Kwoma people, a community where the architecture of the ceremonial house dictates the rhythm of visual expression. In these villages, the men’s ceremonial houses act as the primary centers for painting and sculpture, functioning much like cathedrals in other parts of the world. These structures are often the largest and most sacred buildings in a village, rising high above ordinary dwellings to host religious rites and communal gatherings.

The artist's work is deeply rooted in the clan identity of the Abgwala Kalaba. Within this social structure, the decoration of a ceremonial house is a matter of significant pride for the village and its constituent clans. The ceilings of these ornate buildings are often adorned with hundreds of painted panels, each representing a specific animal, plant, or supernatural phenomenon associated with a particular clan. These images might include fruit bats, shooting stars, or even more complex figures like crocodiles that represent otherworldly beings.

The Art of the Sago Petiole

The creation of these works requires a disciplined and methodical approach to natural materials. Yuanei utilized sago palm spathes, which are the bark-like bases of the leaves from the sago palm tree. The process begins with trimming and flattening these petioles to create a roughly rectangular surface that follows the natural taper of the plant. Once prepared, the material undergoes a curing process before the artist applies a wash of black clay to the smooth side of the sheet.

The application of design is a careful sequence of layers:

• The initial outlines are laid out using clear water.
• These water designs are then retraced with permanent paint.
• The final stage involves infilling the shapes with color and adding bordering dots.

While one individual may be responsible for the primary design, an assistant often assists with the meticulous task of infilling colors and detailing the borders. This collaborative effort ensures that the finished panels can be tied to the rafters of a ceremonial house using lengths of split cane, forming a visual patchwork of clan symbols.

A Legacy in the Metropolitan Collection

The work of Yuanei reached an international audience through specific commissions directed toward the village of Mariwai. In 1970 and 1973, a series of these paintings were commissioned by Douglas Newton, who was then the first curator of Oceanic art in the Department of the Arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas. These panels were eventually transported to New York, where they became part of the permanent collection at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

These pieces are not merely individual decorations but parts of a larger installation that evokes the essential form of a Kwoma ceremonial house ceiling. In the museum, these suspended panels are arranged to suggest the massive, steeply pitched roofs found in the Sepik River region. Through this preservation, the specific geometric designs and clan symbols of the Kwoma people remain visible, maintaining the connection between the artist's technique and the spiritual identity of the Washkuk Hills.
