Born in Ghent, Belgium, Amédée Cortier was a painter and serigrapher whose creative journey underwent a profound transformation. As his vision matured, his work transitioned into cubism, where colored surfaces began to occupy more space and depth began to diminish. By the 1960s, Cortier moved into abstraction, eventually reaching a stage where his compositions consisted of solid colored surfaces. In his final period, his work pushed the boundaries of abstract art, utilizing color as the sole active element to animate space, often through relief panels where the boundaries of color were defined only by the texture of the support.
