وُلد ديفيد هوكني في مدينة برادفورد بالمملكة المتحدة، ونشأ في كنف عائلة مكونة من خمسة أبناء. كان والده، كينيث هوكني، يعمل ككاتب حسابات وكان من المعارضين للخدمة العسكرية خلال الحرب العالمية الثانية، بينما كانت والدته، لورا، ميثودية ونباتية ملتزمة. قضى سنواته الأولى وسط المشهد الصناعي في يوركشاير، ذلك العالم الذي اتسم بمصانع الطوب والأسواق الصاخبة التي شكلت ملامح بيئته الأولى.
