Early Life, Family and Training

Lauritz Hartz was born on 27 December 1903 in Frederiksberg, Denmark. His early years were marked by a practical engagement with color and craft, having spent time as an apprentice in a color shop. This technical foundation was supplemented by his studies at Købmandsskolen, though his true inclinations were already beginning to pull him toward the visual arts. By 1928, he had secured a journeyman's certificate as a house painter, a qualification that grounded his later explorations in the physical properties of pigment.

The trajectory of his formal education shifted significantly when he was nineteen. At that age, he began receiving instruction from the German Expressionist painter Fritz Urschbach, a mentorship that sparked a deep interest in naturalism. This period of discovery led him to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. There, he refined his skills under the guidance of Sigurd Wandel and Aksel Jørgensen, developing the technical discipline that would define his professional career.

Artistic Style and Technique

Hartz was widely regarded as one of Denmark's finest colourists, possessing a sensitivity to hue that defined his long career. In his early years, his approach to portraits, landscapes, and still lifes was defined by a physical presence; he applied paint in thick, heavy layers that gave his subjects a palpable weight. These formative works relied on a certain density of material to establish form and light.

As his style evolved, the heavy application of pigment gave way to a more skeletal, sketchy quality. The human form, once a central focus, gradually disappeared from his compositions. This transition was accompanied by a shift in his use of medium; the once vivid colours were increasingly thinned with turpentine, losing their original opacity. His later works moved toward a more immediate, almost calligraphic execution, where the essence of a subject was captured through swift, decisive strokes rather than through layered detail.

Exhibitions and Professional Milestones

Hartz’s professional presence in the Danish art scene was established early. He made his debut at the Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling in 1925, marking his entry into the public eye. His commitment to collective artistic expression led him to become a founding member of the Corner group in 1932. This association became a central pillar of his career, particularly as he became identified with the Odsherred Painters through his involvement with the group.

His contributions to Danish painting earned him significant institutional recognition. In 1940, he was awarded the Eckersberg Medal, a distinction that acknowledged his growing reputation as one of the country's premier colorists. This was followed much later by the Thorvaldsen Medal in 1967, an honor that reflected the enduring respect for his technical skill and his unique ability to capture the essence of a subject through color and form.

Later Years and Death

The later decades of Hartz’s life were marked by a persistent struggle with his health. Beginning around 1935, his physical condition began to decline, leading to increasingly frequent hospitalizations. By 1942, this necessity became permanent, as he was admitted to a hospital in Nykøbing Sjælland, where he would remain for much of his remaining years.

Despite these challenges, his creative impulse remained steady, though the medium of his expression underwent a significant shift. In 1964, he made the decision to cease painting entirely. From that point forward, his artistic focus narrowed, and he worked exclusively in drawing and watercolor. This transition marked a final, distilled chapter in his long career, moving away from the heavy textures of his youth toward a more delicate application of color and line.

Lauritz Hartz died on 22 September 1987 in Nykøbing Sjælland. He left behind a substantial body of work, much of which is preserved in the Holstebro Museum of Art, which holds the largest collection of his paintings and thousands of his works on paper.
