The Form of the Apple

The shape of an apple recurs in the work of Cornelis Franse, known to many as Kees Franse. It is a recurring motif that bridges his various disciplines, appearing in woodcuts, lithographs, and even as a wooden sculpture. Born in Oud-Beijerland, his hands moved between the heavy weight of sculpture and the delicate precision of graphic arts. He was a man of many mediums, working as a sculptor, lithographer, wall painter, watercolorist, and draftsman. His output was not limited to a single surface; he occupied the space of the printmaker and the painter with equal intent.

His training took place between 1944 and 1948/9, a period that shaped the technical foundation of his later, more abstract explorations. By 1949, his active period was in full swing. He did not settle into a single lane. Instead, he navigated the complexities of modernism through diverse techniques, from the sharp lines of a woodcut to the fluid application of a brush.

A Multi-Faceted Practice

Franse’s career was defined by a refusal to remain within one boundary. He was as comfortable with the grit of a lithograph as he was with the tactile nature of wood. His work often leaned toward the abstract, stripping subjects down to their essential forms. Even when he turned his attention to portraiture, such as in his Portret van Willem Westbroek, the essence of his formal training remained visible. He was a practitioner of the modern style, seeking a language that spoke through shape and texture rather than mere imitation.

His influence extended beyond his own studio into the realm of education. From 1969 to 1982, he held a position as a teacher at an academy or university, passing on his technical knowledge during the final decade of his life. This period of teaching coincided with his continued production of graphic works, including lithographs produced in the late 1970s and early 1980s. His presence in the Dutch art scene was marked by this duality: the creator and the educator.

The Final Years in Rotterdam

The trajectory of his life leads to Rotterdam, where he died in 1982. His work remains a record of a life spent mastering the physical properties of his materials. Whether it was the grain of wood or the texture of paper, Franse sought to understand how a subject—be it an apple or a human face—could be distilled into its most potent visual components. His legacy is found in the varied ways he approached a single subject, proving that a single motif can be reimagined through a dozen different techniques.
