The Versatile Polymath of Rotterdam

Jacob Lois was a man of immense variety, a figure whose life in the Dutch Republic was defined by a wide array of professional pursuits. While he was a painter, he was equally known as a historian, architect, etcher, and graphic artist. His interests extended into the realms of commerce and industry; he worked as a merchant and a manufacturer, specifically as a blue dyer. In a notable feat of innovation, he established the first calender mill in Rotterdam, utilizing wind power to mechanically dye fabrics on a large scale with indigo imported from Asia via the VOC. Beyond his commercial ventures, Lois served his community in various capacities, including as a captain of the citizenry, a regent of public almshouses, and a schepen.

Artistic and Architectural Legacy

In the realm of art, Lois is remembered as a "famous painter," though his diverse responsibilities meant his career as an artist was limited. Known works include two portraits of a man and a woman in shepherd costumes from 1645, which may depict the artist and his fiancée, as well as a biblical scene of the Baptism of Christ in the Jordan. His architectural contributions are equally significant, most notably his role as the master builder of the Schielandshuis. He is also associated with the design of a house at the Wijnhaven and the tomb of Witte Cornelisz. As a historian, he authored a chronicle of Rotterdam, covering the years from 1270 to 1671, which served as a vital historical source for centuries.
