Born in Kaufbeuren, Germany, he moved to Munich where he attended the Kunstgewerbeschule, studying under teachers such as Maximilian Dasio and Julius Diez. His early professional life was marked by a diverse range of creative pursuits; he worked as a freelance commercial artist and gained recognition for his exlibris designs. His graphic works appeared in various publications, including the magazine Jugend. Beyond graphic arts, Wilm engaged in painting, producing oil paintings and ivory miniatures, often employing a technique reminiscent of Gothic painting. He also worked as an illustrator and designer, creating advertising graphics such as the lion for Löwenbräu.
