The Artistic Journey of George Dury
Born in Würzburg, Germany, George Dury was a Bavarian-American portrait artist who achieved distinction in both oil and pastel. His formal training began at the age of 13 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he studied under Heinrich Maria von Hess and Clemens von Zimmermann. After graduating at age 21, he gained early acclaim for a specialized encaustic painting technique. This method, which produced small cabinet portraits, was noted for its durability and its ability to closely resemble miniature paintings on ivory. His early European career included serving as a court painter for King Ludwig I of Bavaria, through which he painted subjects such as Prince Adalbert of Bavaria and Queen Consort Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen.
Life and Legacy in America
Following the Revolutions of 1848, Dury emigrated to the United States in 1849, eventually settling in Nashville, Tennessee. His career in America was marked by significant commissions and the challenges of the American Civil War, during which he continued to paint portraits of both Union and Confederate officers, including Gen. Robert E. Lee. The Tennessee state legislature later commissioned him to paint several prominent figures, including President Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. His work is preserved in prestigious collections, including the US White House and the National Portrait Gallery. Dury passed away in Nashville after a period of paralysis.
