Early Life and Family Roots William Taylor Copeland was born in London, United Kingdom, in 1797, the son of William Copeland, a partner at Josiah Spode II’s Stoke Potteries, and Mary Fowler. His lineage traced back to Staffordshire pottery families with deep roots in Stoke-on-Trent's ceramic heritage. From a young age, he was immersed in the world of ceramics, inheriting his father’s passion for innovation and craftsmanship within the
Spode empire. This formative experience would profoundly shape his future endeavors as a businessman and leader of Copeland & Sons. The Rise of Copeland & Sons Following his father's passing in 1868, William Taylor Copeland ascended to headship of the porcelain firm, securing the reins of Spode’s legacy.
