His early years were marked by a sense of displacement, moving from Little Baddow to Hampstead, a movement that mirrored the shifting social landscapes he would later document. The loss of his father, a painter and etcher, when Tony was on
ly eight months old, left a void that was filled by the steadfast presence of his mother, Effie Irene Pearce.
