Born in 1830 in County Londonderry, O'Connor faced an early life defined by loss, being orphaned at twelve. This instability led him into the wings of the Belfast and Liverpool theaters, working as a call-boy and
scene-painting assistant. These early years provided a technical foundation that most fine artists lacked. He learned how to manipulate light and scale to create believable environments for an audience. By 1848, his career moved to Drury Lane, and by 1863, he held the position of Principal Scene Painter at the Haymarket Theatre.
