A Life in Bloom

Born in Copenhagen on 12 August 1799, Hermania Sigvardine Neergaard grew up in the home of a merchant, Hans Peter Neergaard. Her path toward the canvas began under the guidance of Frederik Christian Camradt at his drawing and painting school. This early training provided her with the technical foundation to pursue a career as a flower and still-life painter.

Her debut at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibitions in 1821 featured a gouache vase of flowers, a technique she had learned by studying the works of her teacher. This first submission set the stage for a long period of professional activity. For over five decades, Neergaard was a regular presence at these exhibitions, contributing 116 works to the Charlottenborg collections until her death in 1875.

Evolution of Style and Subject

As her career progressed, Neergaard moved from the delicate use of gouache to working with oils. Her early compositions often focused on flowers arranged in bowls, baskets, or vases. In these initial years, her work reflected the influence of Camradt, characterized by more compact bouquets and a subdued color palette. She frequently utilized dark backgrounds to create a sharp contrast, allowing white callas or yellow irises to emerge from the shadows.

The later years of her life brought a change in both subject and scale. Inspired by the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, she began incorporating Etruscan vases into her compositions starting in 1831. Her focus expanded beyond cultivated arrangements to include wild flowers and outdoor plants. In these later paintings, the flora often grew to fill the entire surface of the canvas, moving away from the structured stillness of her earlier still lifes.

Legacy and Recognition

Neergaard’s skill earned her a place within influential social and artistic circles. She was associated with Nysø Manor near Præstø and moved in the same circles as Thorvaldsen, who eventually purchased one of her paintings for his own collection. Her ability to capture botanical detail led to her work being acquired by the Danish royal family, including kings Christian VIII and Frederick VII.

Beyond her personal achievements, she supported the art community by teaching flower painting. Today, her botanical studies are preserved in significant institutions, such as the Statens Museum for Kunst. Her paintings remain a record of the botanical interests and artistic traditions of 19th-century Denmark.
