A Life Dedicated to the Arts
Erwin Seaver Barrie was an American businessman in the arts who played a significant role in the New York City art scene. Born in Canton, Ohio, he pursued his studies at Cornell University and later studied landscape painting at the Art Institute of Chicago. His professional journey led him to manage the art collection at Carson Pirie Scott, where he developed friendships with artists such as Hovsep Pushman.
Barrie is most notably recognized for his long tenure managing the Grand Central Art Galleries. He began his leadership there in 1922 and continued until his retirement in 1975. Under his guidance, the galleries operated within Grand Central Terminal and later relocated to the Biltmore Hotel. He was known for his respectful treatment of artists, even going so far as to enter a painting in an artist's name to ensure they could receive recognition and prizes.
Artistic Pursuits and Legacy
Beyond his work as an art dealer and manager, Barrie was also a painter. In 1950, he held an exhibition of his own works titled "Famous Golf Holes I Have Played." His paintings often sought to capture atmospheric impressions, such as the lyric reflections in water and the soft textures of trees. One of his notable works, Pine Valley Club, 14th Hole (Par 3, 169 YDS.), is held in the Tucson Museum of Art.
Throughout his career, Barrie helped manage various divisions, including the "Grand Central Moderns," which represented artists such as Louise Nevelson and Byron Browne. He remained a central figure in the art world for over five decades until his death in Delray Beach, Florida.
