Early Life, Family and Training

Carl Schröder entered the world on 16 April 1802 in Brunswick. He was born into a family defined by specific social roles, the son of August Heinrich Schröder and Dorothea Maria Claus. His early years were shaped by the structured environment of the Martinum in Brunswick, where he remained a student until the age of 14. This period provided the foundational discipline required before his technical instruction began.

His transition into formal art training was direct and practical. He was trained in oil painting by D. Riedmann, who held the position of the first painter at the Stobwasser factory in Brunswick. This apprenticeship provided a technical grounding in the medium. By the age of 17, Schröder moved toward more rigorous academic study, enrolling at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. This move from industrial-based instruction to a formal academy marks the definitive shift in his development as a painter.

Professional Career and Travels

Schröder’s professional trajectory was defined by a pragmatic struggle for survival in the art market. After completing his studies at the Dresden Academy, he returned to Brunswick to establish himself as a portrait painter. The market, however, proved insufficient for his needs. To secure a steady income, he turned to the commercial task of painting cans. This period of his life highlights the gap between formal training and the economic realities of a working artist in the mid-19th century.

His career eventually moved beyond the confines of Brunswick. In 1824, he secured a position as a drawing teacher for Prince Antoni Paweł Sułkowski in Reisen, located in the Province of Posen. This role provided a departure from his earlier commercial struggles. Following this tenure, he spent time in Munich before returning to his home region. His professional life was not limited to the studio; he was a significant figure in art education, eventually securing appointments at the Martino-Katharineum in Brunswick and the teacher training college in Wolfenbüttel in 1841.

Marriage and Family Life

Schröder’s domestic life was anchored by his 1838 marriage to Caroline Wilhelmine Röhll. She was the daughter of Christian Dietrich Röhll, a locksmith who had established himself as a gold and silver manufacturer, and Johanna Wilhelmine Augusta Chemnitius. This connection linked the artist to a family of established industrial means, providing a stable social framework for his professional activities in Brunswick.

The union produced seven children. Among them, his daughters Marie and Louise Schröder are specifically identified in historical records. The family structure remained a constant throughout his later years in Brunswick, even as his professional focus shifted between teaching and genre painting. His legacy was physically preserved through his descendants, as his daughters were responsible for the eventual donation of several of his paintings to the Städtische Museum Braunschweig.
