Spanish Civil War: Banting’s most dramatic political involvement occurred during the Spanish Civil War. He attempted to join the International Brigades fighting against Franco's forces, highlighting his willingness to put himself at risk for ideological convictions.

Ministry of Information: During World War II, he worked as an art director for the Ministry of Information’s Strand Films unit, creating propaganda posters and designing sets for wartime films.

Left-Wing Publications: He contributed to Our Time, a left-wing monthly magazine, and co-edited Salvo for Russia, an anthology of poetry and essays supporting the Soviet Union.

Style and Technique

Banting’s artistic style is difficult to categorize neatly. While undeniably influenced by Surrealism, his work also draws on elements of vorticism, Cubism, and decorative arts. His paintings are often characterized by a meticulous attention to detail, a subtle use of color, and a preference for muted tones. He frequently employed collage techniques, incorporating found objects and fragments of text into his compositions.

His book jacket designs were particularly notable for their innovative approach to typography and illustration.
