Born near Belfast, Ireland, in 1819, James Hamilton embarked on a journey that would lead him from the shores of his homeland to the heart of the American art scene. After immigrating to the United States at the age of fifteen, settling in Philadelphia, he transitioned from a career in business to become one of the most evocative landscape painters of the nineteenth century.
