The Alchemy of the Everyday
In the hands of Robert Glen Ginder , the mundane is transformed into the monumental. A multi-faceted visual artist whose practice spans painting, sculpture, assemblage, and photography, Ginder possesses a singular ability to elevate common objects and scenes into venerable artifacts. Born in Alamosa, Colorado , his artistic journey has been shaped by the diverse landscapes of both New York and Southern California , eventually leading him to his current home and studio in Las Vegas, Nevada . His work does not merely depict reality; it seeks to re-examine it through a spiritual lens, inviting viewers to find sanctity in the ordinary.
Ginder’s technique is a masterful dialogue between the ancient and the contemporary. He frequently engages with the classical methods of the old masters, utilizing gold leaf and gilding to bestow a sense of preciousness upon his subjects. By juxtaposing these traditional, almost sacred techniques with modern subject matter—such as Southern Californian stucco homes, iconic palm trees, or simple still lifes—he creates a tension that turns everyday architecture and objects into modern icons. This use of light and precious materials allows him to breathe a contemporary vitality into works that feel both timeless and deeply rooted in the present moment.
Symbolism and the Passage of Time
The essence of Ginder’s work lies in his exploration of time, history, and the concept of permanence. He utilizes elements of age to create pieces that function as historical echoes, prompting a deeper reflection on the complexity of the past and the present. A profound example of this can be seen in his Fruit Stand , where the lush, tactile abundance of ripening fruit is contrasted with the silent, ticking presence of a clock. This inclusion serves as a poignant memento mori , reminding the observer of the ephemeral nature of life even as the painting itself freezes that beauty in a state of eternal ripeness.
His compositions often serve to validate and venerate the structures of our lives. Whether he is painting California bungalows or the simple arrangement of a marketplace, his goal is to elicit respect for subjects that might otherwise be overlooked. Through his meticulous trompe l’oeil style and the heavy, sculptural application of oil paint, Ginder ensures that every texture—from the smooth skin of an apple to the weathered surface of a wall—demands a tactile engagement from the viewer.
