The Masland Mat Motif: Symbolism and Technique
The Masland mat, originating from Rajasthan, India, is more than just a material; it’s a symbol of resilience and permanence—characteristics that resonate powerfully within Jana's artistic vision. Traditionally used for waterproofing walls and protecting buildings during monsoon seasons, the mat’s
textured surface lends itself beautifully to intricate
geometric patterns . Jana expertly translates these patterns into mesmerizing visual compositions, often incorporating stylized depictions of Buddhist deities or tribal motifs. The resulting murals are not merely decorative; they convey narratives steeped in cultural significance.

Buddhist iconography plays a crucial role in shaping Jana’s artistic aesthetic. Recurring themes of lotus blossoms, mandalas, and stylized representations of Buddha figures appear prominently in his works—underscoring the artist's engagement with spiritual concepts. These images are rendered with meticulous precision and imbued with
vibrant colors —creating pieces that evoke contemplation and convey profound messages about compassion and enlightenment. Jana’s artistic explorations reflect a broader interest in conveying universal values through visual language.
