Early Life and Artistic Training

Miriam McKinnie enters the scene in Evanston, Illinois, born on May 22, 1906. The American artist begins her development far from the quiet suburbs of her birth, moving through the structured environments of formal art education. Her training takes her first to the Minneapolis School of Fine Art in Minnesota. From there, the path leads to the Kansas City Art Institute in Missouri. These institutions provide the technical foundation for a career that would eventually span public spaces and private collections.

In the studios of her training, McKinnie refines her craft under the guidance of Anthony Angarola. This mentorship marks a critical phase in her development, bridging the gap between student exercises and professional practice. She moves through these formative years absorbing the techniques of her instructors, preparing for a career that would eventually see her work commissioned by federal agencies to decorate the public landscape.

Public Commissions and Murals

The Great Depression shifts the landscape of American art as the Treasury Department’s Section of Fine Arts begins commissioning works to boost national morale. McKinnie enters this movement through public spaces. In 1938, she completes an oil-on-canvas mural titled Harvest for the Marshall, Illinois post office. The work sits within a federal program designed to bring art to the everyday lives of citizens through public buildings.

By 1939, the focus turns to Forest Park, Illinois. Commissioned by the Section of Fine Arts, McKinnie produces a watercolor rendering of The White Fawn. This subject matter finds its way into the United States post office in Forest Park in 1940 as a WPA-commissioned mural. The imagery connects local history to the federal effort to decorate public infrastructure.

Her commitment to community spaces extends beyond the federal mandates of the 1930s. In 1958, following a fire that destroyed parts of the Edwardsville, Illinois public library, McKinnie donates four untitled murals to the institution. These works remain part of the library's collection, marking a transition from large-scale federal commissions to local philanthropic support.

Exhibitions and Awards

The early years of the 1930s see her presence growing within the Missouri art scene. She exhibits at the St. Louis, Missouri Artist Guild in 1929, 1930, 1931, and 1933. During this period, her technical skill in printmaking gains specific recognition. In 1933, she receives the Niedringhaus Prize for lithography.

Her influence extends toward the national stage through her involvement with the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors. This membership marks a period of consistent professional recognition. Between 1935 and 1939, she secures multiple prizes from the National Association of Women Painters & Sculptors in New York City, winning in 1935, 1937, and 1939.
